UPSC Syllabus 2027: Prelims, Mains and Interview Explained

A clear guide to the UPSC CSE syllabus for Prelims, Mains and the Personality Test, with a practical method to map topics to weekly preparation.

UPSC CSE Syllabus 2027: How to Read It and Turn It into a Plan

The official UPSC Civil Services syllabus is the starting point for preparation. Use the latest notification on the UPSC website as the authoritative reference; this guide explains a method for studying the syllabus, not a substitute for the official wording.

Preliminary Examination

General Studies Paper I covers current events, Indian history and national movement, Indian and world geography, polity and governance, economic and social development, environment and ecology, biodiversity and climate change, and general science. Paper II (CSAT) tests comprehension, reasoning, decision-making, mental ability and basic numeracy; it is qualifying under the rules stated in the current notification.

Main Examination

The written stage includes qualifying language papers and papers used for merit as specified in the notification. The merit papers cover Essay, General Studies I–IV and the optional subject papers. Read each GS paper line by line: history and society; governance, constitution and international relations; technology, economy, environment and security; and ethics, integrity and aptitude. The Personality Test follows the written stage for candidates who qualify.

How to map the syllabus

Create a tracker with four columns: exact syllabus phrase, source or book, current-affairs connection and practice status. Break broad phrases into manageable subtopics only when the official syllabus supports them. Link every current-affairs note to a syllabus phrase. Use official previous papers to see how questions test these areas; do not infer that a past question guarantees repetition.

A weekly plan can allocate fixed slots to static study, current affairs, revision and answer writing. Review the tracker each weekend: mark studied topics, identify gaps and schedule practice. For Prelims, connect topics to MCQs and revision. For Mains, practise directive words and concise arguments.

Important: UPSC may revise dates, eligibility or examination rules. Check the official 2027 notification when released, and verify the syllabus against that notification before applying.
