UPSC CSAT Practice Questions: Strategy, Topics and Solved Examples

Build accuracy in UPSC CSAT with a timed practice routine, core topic list, worked reasoning examples and a simple method to review mistakes.

UPSC CSAT Practice Questions: A Timed Practice Plan

The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is General Studies Paper II in Prelims. It is qualifying, but candidates should prepare seriously: it tests comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, general mental ability, basic numeracy and data interpretation. Check the current UPSC notification for the qualifying standard and exam rules.

A practical practice sequence

Begin with a 25-question diagnostic set under a strict timer. Record accuracy, time and skipped questions by topic. Practise comprehension separately: identify the passage’s central claim and qualifiers, then eliminate options that add unsupported information.

For arrangements, directions and relations, draw a small table or diagram. In syllogisms, ask whether a conclusion must follow from the statements, rather than whether it merely sounds plausible. Revise percentages, ratios, averages, time and work, speed and distance, and basic data interpretation. Use estimation to catch calculation errors.

Worked reasoning example

Statements: All analysts are readers. Some readers are writers.

Conclusion: Some analysts are writers.

This conclusion does not necessarily follow. The statements never establish that an analyst is among the readers who are writers. CSAT questions often test the difference between what could be true and what is guaranteed by the information given.

Three-week routine

Week 1: Diagnose weak areas and revise concepts. Week 2: Practise short topic-wise sets, then review every wrong or guessed answer. Week 3: Attempt full-length timed papers and refine question selection. Classify each error as a concept gap, misreading, calculation slip or time pressure. This makes the next practice session specific.

Do not spend too long on one puzzle. Mark it, move on and return if time remains. After each mock, compare accuracy and time by section instead of looking only at the total score.

Practice question: A candidate answers 40 questions and gets 28 correct. What is the accuracy rate? Answer: 70%.

Reliable CSAT preparation comes from timed practice, careful option analysis and systematic review—not random question solving. Use official UPSC papers to understand the examination’s style.
