List of Public Sector Banks in India with Recent Updates
India currently has 12 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in which the central government maintains a majority ownership. After several major bank mergers and consolidation measures, the public sector banking landscape now consists of six larger banks created through consolidation and six other PSBs that continue to operate independently.
List of Public Sector Banks
State Bank of India (SBI): India’s largest public sector bank, with a wide presence across the country and a strong focus on expanding its digital banking services.
Punjab National Bank (PNB): Became a larger banking institution after the merger of Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India, with the government retaining a significant ownership stake.
Bank of Baroda (BoB): Strengthened its operations after the integration of Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank and remains one of the major public sector banks in India.
Canara Bank: Expanded its scale and branch network following the merger with Syndicate Bank, giving it a substantial presence across India.
Union Bank of India: Grew through the amalgamation of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank, creating a larger and more diversified public sector banking network.
Indian Bank: Increased its scale and asset base after the merger with Allahabad Bank and continues to operate as a major PSB.
Bank of India (BoI): Continues to operate as an independent public sector bank, with significant government ownership and increasing emphasis on digital banking and retail services.
Central Bank of India: Continues to operate as an independent public sector bank, with the central government holding a substantial majority stake.
Indian Overseas Bank: Functions independently and continues to expand its banking presence through new branches and improved customer services.
UCO Bank: Places emphasis on sustainable banking initiatives while exploring newer credit products and green-focused deposit schemes.
Bank of Maharashtra: Based in Pune, the bank has maintained a focus on improving operational efficiency and upgrading its digital banking infrastructure.
Punjab & Sind Bank: Operates as a nationalised public sector bank with a strong government presence and a focus on serving customers across its banking network.
Recent Sector Updates
No Further Mergers Announced: Recent reports about possible mergers involving smaller public sector banks, including UCO Bank and Bank of Maharashtra, have been described as speculative. The public sector banking structure continues to consist of 12 banks.
Expansion of Digital Banking: Public sector banks such as Bank of India and Indian Bank are increasing their focus on mobile banking applications, digital account opening, and automated customer onboarding to strengthen their digital services.
Capital Strength and Credit Growth: PSBs continue to focus on improving profitability and financial strength. Better asset quality, lower levels of non-performing assets (NPAs), and continued growth in lending, particularly in retail and agriculture, have supported their overall performance.
